Okay, okay I know calling Athens the most underrated city in Europe is a bold claim, but hear me out. I genuinely believe this sun-soaked capital is the unsung hero of the city break scene. While most of us have passed through it en route to an island, I’m here to tell you Athens deserves your full attention for at least three glorious nights. And of course I explored it the only way I know how as a designer. Which means I judged everything by how it looked, felt, and yes… even smelled. You're welcome.

First Impressions: It’s Giving Ancient Glam Meets Leafy Chic
We started our trip just outside the bustle of the city centre in the suburb of Kifisia (think Notting Hill meets a Greek botanical garden). We checked into the TwentyOne Hotel, which felt like the younger, cooler sibling of Soho House. The vibes were, Clean lines, leafy streets, and bathrooms that deserve their own Instagram account. I’m a sucker for a well-lit sink and great quality brassware, Plus, the place was spotless, Actual joy.
Now, full disclosure the breakfast was a little transient. Most guests seemed to be pit-stopping for a night, but it made people watching during our morning coffee rather interesting. Think stylish locals mixing with laid-back tourists and the occasional Very Confused Businessman.
Getting into the city, we had our doubts as on the map it's about a 40 minute car ride however it was a dream. Kifisia is the last stop on the train line, so you always get a seat (peak smugness), and it’s just €1.20 for a 30-minute journey through leafy suburbs into Athens Biktoria station. Can you even get a Pret coffee for that in London!

Sights that are intact!
Athens is basically the original architectural influence. You’ve got the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and a million other ways to feel like you’re in a very classy episode of a period drama. My sister & travel partner on this trip is a classics major, so we hit all the big hitters, and I have to admit, they really are that impressive IRL. it was slightly hotter than expected for May with the average daily temp being 27 degrees, so hat, bottled water etc... is a must.
My personal highlight? The National Archaeological Museum. Fully air-conditioned €8 entry, and stacked with gorgeous marble sculptures you can get right up close to. The level of craftsmanship really hit home, It reminded me that in interiors, like in life, we should always nod to the past. Classical details, timeless textures, sculptural pieces.
Eating Your Way Through Athens (But Make It Chic)
We were team brunch-lunch-light dinner, mainly because we averaged 22,000 steps a day and couldn’t face a three-course feast post-sunset. Key takeaway: avoid eating near major tourist sites unless lukewarm moussaka is your thing.
Here's are few of our favs!
Plaka, Cute from afar, but up close felt a bit “I ❤️ Greece” t-shirt and selfie-stick central. Instead, head to Koukaki it’s the Brooklyn of Athens, in the best way. Here, we found VAL, an incredibly talented ceramicist who hand paints and fires all her pieces in her leafy studio. Think soft pastels, organic shapes, and a space that just screams "artisan sanctuary." Honestly, I could’ve moved in.

Final Thoughts
Athens may not be the obvious choice for a city break, but in my opinion, that’s exactly why you should go. It’s affordable, inspiring, has both ancient and contemporary beauty. Whether you're a history buff, a design obsessive or just someone who enjoys a really well designed bathroom, this city delivers.

Also: if your city break doesn’t end with handmade ceramics, incredible marble statues, and a vest tan, did it even happen?
